This year Carmeda celebrates its 25th anniversary. From its very beginning in October of 1984, Carmeda’s mission has been to provide the medical device community with high performance blood compatible surface coatings.
The company was founded by Dr Olle Larm and Per Olsson, Professor of Experimental Surgery at the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm. These gentlemen are the creators of a technology, based on Dr. Larm’s invention of end-point attachment of heparin, which dramatically improves the blood compatibility of artificial materials in contact with blood. This technology is still the basis for Carmeda's current business.
The Carmeda® BioActive Surface technology (CBAS®) is applied to various medical devices from leading companies, such as Medtronic, Berlin Heart and W.L. Gore & Associates. Usage of CBAS continues to increase annually and today hundreds of thousands of patients have been treated with CBAS coated devices.
The Carmeda BioActive Surface technology has contributed to the improvement of quality of life for patients treated with CBAS products. Together with partners in the device community, Carmeda will continue forward with this important mission in the years to come.
